Coming attractions: The Empty Nest Comments
She works on her lesson plans early in the morning, with a blanket wrapped around her for warmth. I return to bed for an early morning nap. The kids have been in school or college for two hours now and it’s just the two of us.
She eats leftover nachos before 11 a.m. I fix eggs and potatoes after I wake up after 9:30 a.m.
You need to do more on your day off, she tells me from the computer. But I just mowed the entire lawn, I reply and half my laundry is already done before noon. But she would have done more, she tells me.
Not many words are said. But there doesn’t need to be. We’re here together and it feels good.
All the dishes are washed, so I began preparing dinner soon after I wipe up the last of the lunch crumbs.
Maybe it’s a sham, this extra boost of productivity today. Maybe it was a ruse to show her I don’t goof off every Monday.
We talk some more and she settles on the couch to watch Twilight again. It’s time for me to write.
Soon the kids will return home and the quietness will end.
Some day, it will be like this for real. And I can’t wait.
